Cork producers and Roussillon winegrowers have never been quite so close! Diam Bouchage now offers a closure made from Roussillon cork and in doing so promotes the local economy and helps in the sustainable development of the region.
Diam Bouchage has been established in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of southern France for over 70 years and today sells nearly one billion closures every year. Although used in quality wines around the entire world, the company remains very particularly attached to the local economy.
In using Roussillon cork, Diam Bouchage plays a part in maintaining the region’s cork oak forests. The cork oak has a crucial role in controlling fires because, like the vine, this tree provides a natural barrier to the spread of flames. Moreover, this investment enables owners of local cork oak forests to look after their woodlands by cutting tall grass and thereby further reducing the risk of fire spreading.
At the same time, Diam Bouchage is supporting traditional cork crafts through the Maureillas Cork Museum. In partnership with the Museum staff, the company Cérétane is working on the renovation of an exhibition room with a new theme: “from making the closure to making the wine”.
It is therefore an obvious choice for Diam Bouchage to offer the Roussillon Winemakers this Diam closure made from cork harvested in Vallespir, Aspres and Albères.
